Soak up the warm weather this summer and hit the open road. Just like National Lampoon’s Vacation, the summer road trip is a classic outing that ultimately will create lasting memories. Whether it’s a day-trip to the lake or multiple-day adventure, preparation is key to reducing any potential stress.
For your vehicle
Prior to your road trip, ensure that your vehicle is road ready by checking its breaks, hoses, belts and tires. For your comfort, it is vital for air conditioning to be working properly. A well-maintained vehicle can result in lower fuel costs and increased lifespan of your vehicle and its parts.
- Top off all fluids: engine oil, windshield washer fluid, antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid
- Check tire pressure: Ensure all your tires – including the spare – are inflated to manufacturer’s specifications.
- Pack an emergency kit: flashlight, tow strap, road flares, engine oil, antifreeze, water and first aid kit, multi-tool
- See clearly by washing headlights and windows.
- Fill your tank to avoid being stranded mid-trip.

For your trip
Before you load your vehicle for your trip, clear out all the clutter. Whether travelling alone or with family, consider what will be required for food, drink and entertainment on the road.
- Hydrate frequently: water, juice, coffee, pop, energy drinks, CO-OP® Big Cool slushes
- Grab fun and nutritious snacks: almonds, trail mix, fruit, protein bars, licorice, jerky
- Offer kid-friendly entertainment: books, games, toys, colouring supplies
- Pack cleaning supplies: garbage bags, hand wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper
- Be comfortable: pillows, blankets, sunglasses, hats
- Don’t forget your charger for electronic devices.

For your peace of mind
If possible, build more time into your itinerary to accommodate unforeseen stops: bathroom breaks, moments to stretch or just take in an interesting sight. Plan as much as you can, but know things can unexpectedly change.
- Map route: Incorporate scenic points or children’s interests.
- Exercise: Stop and toss around a frisbee or visit a playground for a change of pace.
- Maintain routine: Try to ensure wake and sleep schedules remain consistent.
- Watch weather: Know what to do and when to stop for inclement weather.
- Download Co-op App: Find your nearest Co-op Gas Bar and Convenience Store to refuel, fill tires with free air and use a clean washroom.
A road trip is all about the journey. So load your favourite playlist, podcast or audiobook and hit the open road this summer. Let us take you there.
