Nutrition To-Go

You’re on the road and out of nowhere your stomach growls. So you decide to stop at the nearest gas station to fill up your car and your stomach. However, you told yourself you’re going to stick to your healthy eating plan. What do you do?

Believe it or not, there are healthy food options at the convenience store. Next time you find yourself in this situation, fuel your body with nutrients that can be found in convenience store products.

Almonds

Almonds are the ultimate go-to road trip snack and are also high in fibre, protein and good omega-3 fats. Opt for an unsalted, roasted, lightly salted or dark-chocolate version.

Beef Jerky

Beef jerky may be an unlikely healthy snack but it has many benefits. It is high in protein and doesn’t raise your insulin levels. Some brands have a lot of sodium so just read the ingredient list and pick a brand that is low in MSG and sodium nitrate. Beef jerky is a great option as a high-protein, low-carb snack!

Protein Bar

While you shouldn’t rely on protein bars as a complete meal replacement, they are excellent snack alternatives. Protein bars will keep you fuller for longer than a traditional granola, energy or chocolate bar and the flavour options are endless. Protein bars also contribute essential amino acids to your body and can help you build and maintain muscle mass.

Herbal Tea and Black Coffee

Without the cream and sugar, these perky, hot drinks are a wise choice to make while following your new year’s commitment. Herbal teas are available in many flavours and each has their own benefit. Black coffee can boost your metabolism and increase how fast your body burns fat.

Sunflower Seeds

The baseball game’s classic companion can also help lower your cholesterol. Sunflower seeds contain tryptophan, which helps the body process serotonin, also known as the “feel-good” chemical. Opt for unsalted seeds and watch your portion control amounts, which can be easier with an in-shell sunflower seed.

Granola Bar

Some granola bars are high in sugar so be sure to check the ingredient list and aim for one that has whole grains as the first ingredient. This is a better alternative to a sugary, chocolate bar that will leave you hungry an hour from now. Many granola bars offer vitamins and minerals.

Dark Chocolate

Research doesn’t lie. Studies show chocolate containing plant sterols and cocoa flavanols lowers cholesterol and improves blood pressure. You can reap these benefits by indulging in small amounts of chocolate that is at least 70 per cent cacao (or cocoa). While you are satisfying your sweet tooth with dark chocolate, you may also realize your salty and fatty-foods cravings are diminishing. Oh, and did you know it can reduce stress?

Just remember, moderation is key and you can still follow your new year’s resolutions on the road. Happy, healthy snacking!
