Helping kids play the sports they love

Kids who play organized sports are given the opportunity to grow their self-esteem while learning the values of teamwork and co-operation. However, when registration and equipment expenses put up a financial barrier, it can keep them from playing the sports they love.

On Fuel Good Day 2017, New Horizon Co-op donated 10 cents for every litre of gas sold to KidSport Grande Prairie, for a total donation of $4,700.

KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that helps families with costs so more children can live happier, healthier lives enriched by sports. KidSport Canada has helped 750,000 kids play since 1993, including 216 kids in Grande Prairie in 2017.

“KidSport has not just allowed my children to participate in sports; they have provided an opportunity for my children to learn skills that are going to be essential for them to lead active and healthy lives!” wrote one parent in a letter to KidSport.

KidSport’s Grande Prairie chapter and New Horizon Co-op have been community partners for seven years. In addition to Fuel Good Day, Co-op has raised money through charity barbecues, coin box collections and a charity dunk tank.

KidSport also received Fuel Good Day donations in Port Alberni, B.C., Carrot River, Sask., Weyburn, Sask., and Birtle, Man.

Fuel Good Day is September 18, 2018. Fill up at your Co-op Gas Bar and Co-op will donate a minimum of five cents per litre of fuel purchased to registered local charities and non-profit organizations across Western Canada.
