There are so many great summer road trips you can do in one day from Kenora, Ont. Even if you wanted to stay in Kenora, there are still a lot of things to do. Downtown Harbourfront (a park situated on the shore of Lake of the Woods) often hosts concerts, summer festivals and other public events. Before you head out on any of these road trips, check out Husky the Muskie – located only five minutes from Kenora’s Red River Co-op Gas Bar.
Fun Fact: Kenora was originally named Rat Portage. After Rat Portage amalgamated in 1905 with the towns Keewatin and Norman, Kenora was born. The name was a combination of the three towns: Keewatin, Norman, and Rat Portage.

Dryden
Dryden is located on Wagiboon Lake and is home to Max the Moose, a 5.6-metre statue celebrating Canadian wildlife. Check out the Roy Wilson Suspension bridge and the Laura Howe Marsh walking trails. The suspension bridge spans the Wabigoon River and is free to use, and you can easily park at Johnston Park. Notable beaches include Ghost Lake, Johnson’s Beach, Aaron Park and Sandy Beach.
Sioux Narrows
Sioux Narrows is a short drive from Kenora. Located on the shores of Lake of the Woods, the quaint town is a fisherman’s haven. They also boast diverse natural offerings like hiking trails, parks and inland lakes with beautiful, family-friendly beaches.

Nestor Falls
After you explore Sioux Narrows, head to Nestor Falls. The waterfalls are only a short walk from the parking lot which includes picnic tables and facilities. Plan to have a picnic or pit-stop here on your travels.
Pro Tip: You can’t see the waterfalls from your car — if you’re driving from Sioux Narrows, the parking lot for the falls should be to your right.

Hawk Lake
Hawk Lake is another prime destination for fishing enthusiasts. Hawk Lake Lodge is a renowned fishing lodge that offers high-end accommodation; the surrounding lakes are known for incredible fishing spots.
Winnipeg
Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital, is about two hours from Kenora. The city boasts museums, parks and events. Check out the Canadian Museum of Human Rights for a culturally rich experience or the Assiniboine Park Zoo for family fun. The zoo is part of Assiniboine Park, which has cycle paths and was once home to the bear who inspired A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh. You’ll also want to wander around The Forks if you have time to take advantage of the dining, shopping and history available.
Fun Fact: In Cree, Winnipeg means ‘muddy water’. The city was named after the nearby Lake Winnipeg.
