Co-op Goes Green

Providing a sustainable future is something we all worry about these days.

To ensure we are making eco-friendly choices, Co-op gas bars have committed to reducing their environmental footprints.

Sustainable design highlights

Over the last several years, the following eco-friendly options have been implemented:

  • LED lighting for gas bar canopies, car wash interiors, convenience store interiors, exteriors and yard lights.

  • Glass-door coolers and freezers use dramatically less electricity than traditional refrigeration methods.

  • Car wash water reclamation systems target a 50-per-cent reduction in water consumption.

  • Lubricant, windshield washer and DEF containers can be recycled in the blue bins located at Co-op gas bars.

Gas bars are less likely to impact the environment due to innovations such as improved infrastructure monitoring, double-walled fibreglass underground storage tanks and tertiary containment for underground product lines. At gas bars and bulk plants, three levels of protection are being built into sites to avoid leaks and contain petroleum products.

Ste. Anne Co-op in Steinbach, Man. has taken the following initiatives to reduce:

  • Switch from fluorescent to LED lighting

  • Install LED lighting in convenience store and car washes

“These are the areas that have the greatest impact on reducing energy consumption,” said Henry Nickel, General Manager of Ste. Anne Co-op.

Nickel said these changes have been made to a few locations so far and they are currently in the process of changing more locations.
